In samenwerking met het Memento Woordkunstenfestival presenteert ELDERS de Nederlandse kunstenaar Lennart Lahuis (1986, NL) met diverse bestaande en nieuwe installaties, verspreid over de drie verdiepingen van de Broeltoren Noord.
Lahuis onthult visuele informatie over natuurlijke processen, zoals erosie, verbranden en verdampen. Hij combineert deze processen met technologische en wetenschappelijke elementen, waarbij hij de precisie van wetenschap en technologie confronteert met de wisselvalligheid van de natuur. 
De tentoonstelling wordt verrijkt door een samenwerking met woordkunstenares Loeke Vanhoutteghem (1996, BE), die een gedicht heeft geschreven voor de installatie van Lahuis. 
Kom langs tijdens het Memento Woordkunstenfestival en ontdek de tentoonstelling tot en met 30 maart!

In collaboration with the Memento Word arts festival, ELDERS presents Dutch artist Lennart Lahuis (1986, NL) with a series of new and existing installations, spread across the three floors of the northern Broeltower.
Lahuis reveals visual information about natural processes, such as erosion, burning, and evaporating. He combines these processes with technological and scientific elements, contrasting the precision of science and technology with the volatility of nature.
The exhibition is enhanced by a collaboration with word artist Loeke Vanhoutteghem (1996, BE), who has written a poem for Lahuis' installation.
Join us during the Memento Word arts festival, and explore the exhibition until March 30th!

Lennart Lahuis (1986, NL)
Met behulp van een grote verscheidenheid aan materialen en technieken onderwerpt Lennart Lahuis visuele informatie aan natuurlijke processen zoals smelten, verbranden, verdampen en erosie. In elke serie combineert de kunstenaar deze natuurlijke fenomenen met technologische elementen en wetenschappelijke disciplines zoals aardwetenschappen en astronomie. De precisie, die zowel wetenschap als technologie kenmerkt, wordt zo in contrast gebracht met de wisselvalligheid en onvoorspelbaarheid van natuurlijke processen en de elementen. De disciplines waar Lahuis mee werkt worden traditioneel ingezet om kennis te produceren of te bewaren. In zijn werk maken ze echter deel uit van objecten en installaties waarin vluchtigheid en entropie centraal staan, om zo de grenzen van begrijpelijkheid en de materiële voorwaarden voor leesbaarheid te verkennen.
Lennart Lahuis behaalde zijn BFA aan ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Zwolle/Arnhem, Nederland. Van 2011 tot 2013 was hij resident aan De Ateliers in Amsterdam. Hij voltooide residenties aan het BANFF Centre for Visual Arts in Banff, CA; The Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, VS; The Sculpture Studios in Glasgow, UK en het EKWC (Europees Keramisch Werkcentrum) in Oisterwijk, NL.

Loeke Vanhouttegem (1996, BE)


Loeke Vanhoutteghem is een schrijver met een liefde voor het experiment en het podium. Naast een bekroond spoken word artiest (ze werd zowel Gents als West-Vlaams kampioen poetry slam in 2020 en 2021) is ze vooral een allround woordkunstenaar. Loeke schrijft zowel uitdagende slam poetry als gedichten, verhalen of lied- en theaterteksten. Het allerliefst experimenteert Loeke met taal alsof het een verfdoos is. Daarom gaat ze vaak samenwerkingen aan met andere artiesten uit de beeldende kunsten of de muziek. 
Loeke ging als jonge woordkunstenaar mee op tour langs de Vlaamse muziekclubs met de gevestigde waarden van De Dolfijntjes, de band van acteurs Wim Opbrouck en Wim Willaert. 
Loeke is als vocaliste/woordkunstenaar vast lid van het jazz impro ensemble Safety Last Soundpainting Ensemble. Ze is ook één vierde van de Nederlandstalige punkformatie Maria Iskariot (laureaat Soundtrack en winnaar Humo’s Rockrally). Loeke is als schrijver verbonden aan het Kortrijkse Letterzettercollectief. Loeke studeerde vergelijkende moderne letterkunde aan UGent en autonome vormgeving aan KASK/Conservatorium Gent.

Lennart Lahuis (1986, NL)
Using a wide variety of materials and techniques, Lennart Lahuis subjects visual information to natural processes such as melting, burning, evaporation and erosion. In each series, the artist combines these natural phenomena with technological elements and scientific disciplines such as earth science and astronomy. The precision that characterises both science and technology is thus contrasted with the volatility and unpredictability of natural processes and the elements. The disciplines Lahuis works with are traditionally used to produce or preserve knowledge. In his work, however, they are part of objects and installations in which ephemerality and entropy are central, in order to explore the limits of intelligibility and the material conditions for legibility.
Lennart Lahuis obtained his BFA from ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Zwolle/Arnhem, the Netherlands. From 2011 to 2013, he was a resident at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. He completed residencies at the BANFF Centre for Visual Arts in Banff, CA; The Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, USA; The Sculpture Studios in Glasgow, UK and the EKWC (European Ceramic Work Centre) in Oisterwijk, NL.

Loeke Vanhouttegem (1996, BE)

Loeke Vanhoutteghem is a writer with a love of experimentation and the stage. Besides being an award-winning spoken word artist (she became both Ghent and West Flanders poetry slam champion in 2020 and 2021), she is above all an all-round word artist. Loeke writes challenging slam poetry as well as poems, stories or song and theatre texts. Most of all, Loeke likes to experiment with language as if it were a paintbox. Therefore, she often enters into collaborations with other artists from the visual arts or music. 
As a young word artist, Loeke toured Flemish music clubs with the established names of De Dolfijntjes, the band of actors Wim Opbrouck and Wim Willaert. 
As a vocalist/word artist, Loeke is a regular member of the jazz improv ensemble Safety Last Soundpainting Ensemble. She is also one-fourth of Dutch-language punk formation Maria Iskariot (Soundtrack laureate and winner Humo's Rockrally). Loeke is a writer with the Kortrijk Letterzettercollectief. Loeke studied comparative modern literature at UGent and autonomous design at KASK/Conservatory Ghent.

Met zijn zwer­ven­de, poë­ti­sche blik ver­kent Jean-Bap­tis­te Janis­set sinds enke­le jaren zicht­ba­re en onzicht­ba­re werel­den die kunst com­bi­ne­ren met magie, occul­tis­me en alche­mie. Hij ver­kent de meest uit­een­lo­pen­de gebie­den en gaat op zoek naar een spi­ri­tu­eel erf­goed dat bestaat uit ker­ken, begraaf­plaat­sen — al deze fune­rai­re kun­sten met bas-reli­ëf­ver­sie­rin­gen die reli­gi­eu­ze of sym­bo­li­sche motie­ven, plan­ten of men­se­lij­ke figu­ren com­bi­ne­ren. Hier­voor bewan­delt hij paden die tegen elke car­to­gra­fie ingaan, put hij kracht uit oude en mys­tie­ke sym­bo­len, tus­sen kan­sen en risi­co’s legt hij gelei­de­lijk een rou­te af die reso­neert met de cycli van het leven. Van Abo­mey naar Mar­seil­le, waar hij nu woont, van Nan­tes naar Dijon, ver­vol­gens van Ajac­cio naar Algiers, via Parijs, Bas­tia, Saint Éti­en­ne en vele ande­re ste­den, geeft de kun­ste­naar in de loop der tijd vorm aan een palim­psest territorium. 
Voor deze presentatie werken Elders en Jean-Baptiste Janisset samen met Aluvision, die de mobiele Flexbox en modulaire LED-schermen verzorgt.We wensen hen te bedanken om dit project mogelijk te maken. With his wan­de­ring poe­tic eye, Jean-Bap­tis­te Janis­set has for seve­r­al years been explo­ring visi­ble and invi­si­ble worlds that com­bi­ne art with magic, the occult and alche­my. Sur­veying a wide ran­ge of ter­ri­to­ries, he sets out in search of a spi­ri­tu­al heri­ta­ge made up of chur­ches and ceme­te­ries — all the­se fune­ra­ry arts with bas-relief deco­ra­ti­ons com­bi­ning reli­gious or sym­bo­lic motifs, plants or human figu­res. To do this, he takes paths that go against the grain of any car­to­grap­hy, dra­wing strength from ancient and mys­ti­cal sym­bols, taking oppor­tu­ni­ties and risks, and gra­du­al­ly tra­cing an iti­ne­ra­ry that reso­na­tes with the cycles of life. From Abo­mey to Mar­seil­le, whe­re he now lives, from Nan­tes to Dijon, then from Ajac­cio to Algiers, via Paris, Bas­tia, Saint Éti­en­ne and many other towns, the artist is sha­ping a palim­psest ter­ri­to­ry over&#38;nbsp;time.
For this presentation, Elders and Jean-Baptiste Janisset are collaborating with Aluvision, which provides the mobile Flexbox and modular LED screens. Jean-Baptiste Janisset (°1990) is een Franse kunstenaar die woont en werkt in Marseille. Hij studeerde aan de École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes. 
Zijn werk werd solo tentoongesteld bij Window on Franklin in New York (2024), Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud (2023), Galerie Alain Gutharc in Parijs (2022), en Atelier Chiffonnier in Dijon (2019). Janisset nam deel aan groepstentoonstellingen bij Spiagga Libera &#38;amp; Scroll Galerie in Marseille (2024), Frac Paca in Marseille (2023), Everyday Gallery in Antwerpen (2021), Abbaye Saint-Victor in Marseille (2020) en Mo.Co Panacée in Montpellier (2020). 
Recent verbleef de kunstenaar in residentie in de Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud en twee maanden in Kameroen met Fræme.

PHENOMENA is de derde tentoonstelling gecureerd door
ELDERS. Als achtergrond fungeert het verlaten schoolgebouw van Stella Maris, opgericht in 1911, die voor deze gelegenheid voor het laatst te bezoeken is voor de ontwikkeling als residentieel vastgoed.
Het collectief nodigde een selectie internationale kunstenaars uit, waarvan vier voor het eerst werk tonen in België. Een cyclus van immersieve installaties nodigt toeschouwers uit op een expeditie door de verborgen lagen van het gebouw.
ELDERS zet de oorspronkelijke functie van de locatie verder als ruimte waar wereldbeelden vormgegeven werden, met
een stimulerende ervaring die de complexiteit van perceptie en realiteit verkent. PHENOMENA onderzoekt diverse
alternatieve perspectieven, variërend van transhumanistische toekomstbeelden en ongrijpbare fysische principes tot onwaarschijnlijke droomwerelden. Raadselachtige ervaringen
roepen naast vraagstukken over materie en werkelijkheid ook onderliggende beschouwingen over de eigen waarneming en relativiteit op. Ze tonen aan dat wat de mens als werkelijkheid
beschouwt eigenlijk voor een groot deel mentale constructies zijn, waarbij de ultieme realiteit ongrijpbaar blijft.
ELDERS werd opgericht in 2021 met als hoofddoel het organiseren van tentoonstellingen in de regio van Kortrijk. Door
het nomadische aspect verhuizen de projecten telkens naar aangepaste locaties. Huidige leden zijn Joke Anckaert, Joachim Coucke, Gilles Dedecker, Hélène Depondt, Petrus Paklons, Koen Titeca en Dieter Van Caneghem. PHENOMENA is the third exhibition curated by ELDERS. The abandoned school building of Stella Maris that forms the backdrop was erected in 1911, and can be visited for the last time on this occasion before its conversion into residential real estate. The collective invited a selection of international artists, four of which present their work for the first time in Belgium. Through a cycle of immersive installations, they invite the spectators on an expedition through the hidden layers of the building.
ELDERS continues the site’s original function as a space where the worldviews were shaped, with a stimulating experience that explores the complexity of perception and corporeality. PHENOMENA explores various alternative perspectives, ranging from transhumanistic futures and elusive physical
principles to improbable dream worlds. Enigmatic experiences evoke questions of matter and existence, in addition to
underlying reflections on our own perception and relativity. They indicate that what we consider as reality are actually for a
large part constructions of our own minds, making the ultimatereality intangible.
ELDERS was founded in 2021 with the main goal of organizing exhibitions in the region of Kortrijk. Due to the nomadic aspect,

MX ចម្លាក is een documentaire film. De film draait om het maken van een sculptuur: een "MX" (initialen van de kunstenaars in omgekeerde volgorde), gemaakt van een blok zandsteen uit de berg Phnom Kulen. Het beeld wordt gemaakt in het beeldhouwdorp Kampong Thom. De steenhouwers beeldhouwen daar het blok, van zonsopgang tot zonsondergang. MX ចម្លាក់ wordt dan vervoerd op een vlot, over de lengte van de rivier de Tatai, om vervolgens voor altijd geplaatst te worden op een geheime locatie in de jungle van het Kardemomgebergte.De film is voor de eerste maal te zien sinds deze werd geproduceerd voor zijn solo tentoonstelling MX Temple in BPS22 Charleroi in 2019, en wordt bovendien voor deze presentatie in primeur voor de eerste maal als 4K projectie vertoond.

Met werken van: Adem Elahel, Anonieme kritiek, Collective Unconscious 3D, Janne Schimmel, Loulou João en Walter Wathieu.Voor de duur van Wonder en Kortrijk ArtWeekend is Curator Machine te gast in Patria for Phenomena. Bjornus Van Der Borght schrijft over het project: De kunstwerken worden opzettelijk blind te koop aangeboden door Curator Machine, als symbool voor de dominantie van een dictatoriaal systeem. De kunstenaars infiltreren doelbewust in dit heimelijke mechanisme door kunstwerken te produceren die zich slim voordoen als producten. Met behulp van nieuwe media-instrumenten brengen ze een dialoog op gang die de aanwezigheid van bedrijfsdictatuur in onze online cultuur onderzoekt. Curator Machine, dat opereert als een non-profit entiteit, wijst een eigen budget toe om deze collectieve inspanning te ondersteunen en infiltreert op een effectieve manier een consumentgerichte context met artistieke interventies.
 De eerste versie bevatte werk van 17 kunstenaars die gevraagd werden een 3D object te printen in 10 exemplaren elk, en was in 2022 te zien in de inkomhal van S.M.A.K. Gent. Voor deze tweede editie die deze zomer gepresenteerd werd in Kunsthal Gent werden zes mediakunstenaars geselecteerd die actief zijn binnen de nieuwe mediakunsten in België. Zij ontwierpen 3D-kunstwerken, elk gelimiteerd tot 18 stuks per kunstenaar.
 Curator Machine komt voort uit het curatoriële onderzoeksproject C U R A T O R. Artist-run tentoonstellingen worden hierbij ontwikkeld tot een samenwerkingsproject: Curator Machine. Je koopt een werk voor 50 euro, waarvan 70 procent naar de kunstenaar gaat. Curator Machine zorgt voor de volledige productie, deze bedraagt per module 42 euro. Het project is dus non-profit. Het publiek wordt aangemoedigd om te investeren in een origineel kunstwerk tegen een democratische prijs. Je kunt het zien als een hack in de openbare ruimte, waarbij de consument wordt geïnspireerd in plaats van uitgebuit.
 Curator Machine werd mogelijk gemaakt door de steun van Stad Gent. 3D product design ontwikkeling en productie ondersteuning door Elias Heuninck, Formlab Gent en 3D printen door Arne Cattoir van 3D4ALL.BE. In samenwerking met kunstenaar Jerry Galle.
PHENOMENA 0.1 wordt ondersteund door de Vlaamse Overheid, Stad Kortrijk en de Nederlandse Ambassade in België.

Elders and Designregio Kortrijk are joining forces for a joint presentation during Wonder and Kortrijk Art Weekend entitled Phenomena. MX ចម្លាក is a documentary film. The film revolves around the creation of a sculpture: an “MX” (initials of the artists in reverse order), made from a block of sandstone from the mountain of Phnom Kulen.
 The sculpture is made in the sculptor village of Kampong Thom. The stone cutters sculpt there and carve the block, from sunrise to sunset. MX ចម្លាក់ is then transported on a raft, along the length of the River Tatai, to then be placed forever in a secret place in the jungle of the Cardamom mountains.
The film is being shown for the first time since it was produced for his solo exhibition MX Temple at BPS22 Charleroi in 2019, and is also being shown as a 4K projection for the first time in this presentation.

writes about the project: The artworks are intentionally presented for sale by Curator Machine in a blind manner, symbolizing the dominance of a dictatorial system. The artists purposefully infiltrate this covert mechanism by producing artworks that cleverly masquerade as products. Utilizing new media tools, they initiate a dialogue that examines the presence of corporate dictatorship within our online culture. Curator Machine, operating as a non-profit entity, allocates its own budget to support this collective effort, effectively infiltrating a consumer-oriented context with artistic interventions.
 The first version featured work by 17 artists who were asked to print a 3D object in 10 copies each, and was on display in the entrance hall of S.M.A.K. Ghent in 2022. For this second edition which was presented earlier at Kunsthal Gent this summer, six media artists active within the new media arts in Belgium were selected. They designed 3D artworks, each limited to 18 pieces per artist.
 Curator Machine stems from the curatorial research project, C U R A T O R. Artist-run exhibitions are hereby developed into a cooperative project: Curator Machine. You purchase a work for 50 euros, 70 percent of which goes to the artist. Curator Machine provides the full production this per module is at 42 euros. Thus, the project is nonprofit. The public is encouraged to invest in an original work of art at a democratic price. You can think of it as a public space hack, where the consumer is inspired rather than exploited.

NL/ ENG  &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;CORRIDOR is de tweede tentoonstelling van ELDERS. Door het brengen van hedendaagse installaties met een immersief karakter creëert dit project een parallel universum dat een ontsnapping biedt aan onze dagelijkse realiteit, maar er tegelijkertijd onverwachte perspectieven op opent. 
 

ELDERS nodigt de toeschouwer uit verschillende werelden te ervaren. We stellen hiermee niet alleen onze perceptie in vraag maar ook de manier waarop we omgaan met ons dagelijks bestaan in zeer uiteenlopende realiteiten, media en platforms. Een reeks hedendaagse technologische media zoals video, augmented reality en interactieve installaties wordt ingezet om de poorten naar verschillende dimensies te openen. Betoverende melodieën, ritmisch gefluister en buitenaardse, bijna magische personages lokken de bezoeker naar het multiversum van CORRIDOR. Via de corridor, gesymboliseerd door een architecturale ingreep door 51N4E en LEAGUE, betreedt de bezoeker de tentoonstelling en ontdekt hij een afgelegen tuin in het hart van de stad. Verborgen van de afleiding en het lawaai van de buitenwereld, met centraal een historisch en vervallen gebouw overwoekerd door planten. Op deze unieke locatie in het centrum van Kortrijk wordt de ervaring versterkt door een interdimensionale winterbar, een plaats voor uitwisseling en interactie die de toegangspoort vormt naar de verschillende werelden van de tentoonstelling.Aangekomen bij de drempel verschijnt bij de ingang een synthetische sirene die ons met fluit klanken bezweert en ons in de corridor lokt. De constante en meeslepende muziek en bewegende beelden worden gecreëerd door datasets van Marianna Simnett vermomd als mythologisch figuur, die werden gevoed in een model van kunstmatige intelligentie. 
Als we de lichten in de gang volgen, stuiten we op een scène van Simon Lehner, die de hedendaagse constructies van identiteit in vraag stelt en een synthese creëert tussen zijn eigen input en door algoritmen en 3D-printing gegenereerde patronen. Door een deur aan de andere kant ontdekken we een speelhal waar het werk van Janne Schimmel fungeert als een interface tussen deze wereld en de virtuele realiteit van computerspelen. De bezoeker wordt uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan het spel en als protagonist door deze geprogrammeerde wereld te lopen. Door digitaal geconstrueerde creaties binnen te smokkelen in wat wij als onze echte wereld ervaren via de schermen van onze smartphones door middel van Augmented Reality, voegt Darren Bader een ongrijpbare laag toe aan de hele tentoonstelling.We betreden de verborgen tuin waar gloeiende lichtjes zichtbaar zijn in een verlaten huis. Het skelet van een caravan bewoond de eerste ruimte, waar Julie Béna zich presenteert in een merkwaardige clowneske vermomming. Op de grens van horror en komedie groeien haar fictieve personages naar catharsis, reiniging en versterking. Via de gang en de zwarte gordijnen betreden we de geheime flora van Laure Prouvost, die als hongerige insecten in het onderbewustzijn graaft, verleid door de hypnotiserende fluisteringen. De warme gloed stimuleert het schouwspel tot een brandend hoogtepunt.Als we de trap opgaan naar de eerste verdieping, vinden we een vreemd stel gemuteerde organismen die groeien in een vervallen ruimte. Ze reageren op onze aanwezigheid, maar aanvankelijk is het onduidelijk of ze vijandig of vriendelijk zijn. Deze biotoop evolueerde ter plaatse door het onderzoek van Antoinette d'Ansembourg, die de voedingsbodem vormde voor een sculpturaal miniatuur bos. Terug in het onbekende, worden we geconfronteerd met de laatste zwarte sluier. Als we deze leegte betreden, komen we in een wereld van comfort en gelukzaligheid. We reizen door ongerepte landschappen van natuurlijke schoonheid. David Claerbout vervaagt de grenzen van wat wij als werkelijkheid beschouwen, en met hoge definitie animatietechniek bevraagt hij de essentie van het bestaan. Van een afstand schijnbaar specifiek, maar van binnenuit allesomvattend.&#38;nbsp; 
Als geheel biedt CORRIDOR zijn bezoekers een fenomenologische reis langs fysieke verschijningen, de droomwereld van het onderbewuste en nieuwe facetten van sociale interactie, waarbij we aan het eind van de tunnel zowel onszelf als elkaar tegenkomen.&#38;nbsp;Gecureerd door ELDERS

David Claerbout woont en werkt in Antwerpen en Berlijn. Hij is bekend voor zijn video-installaties, die hij wereldwijd tentoonstelt. We hopen jullie te zien op onze allereerste Art Talk en gezellige drink&#38;nbsp;in de concertstudio. De deuren openen om 19u en de lezing gaat van start om 20u stipt. De voertaal van deze lezing is Nederlands. De lezing is gratis met mogelijkheid voor een vrije bijdrage.

Werkelijkheid en fictie, verleden en toekomst verweven zich in deze vierdimensionele puzzel waarin een Hollywood actrice via het script dat ze vertolkt verdwaalt in haar onderbewustzijn en de filmsets. Deze film werd opgenomen met een digitale camera, volledig onafhankelijk geproduceerd en oorspronkelijk uitgebracht in 2006 wat de bioscoop ervaring van deze nieuwe restauratie extra de moeite maakt. Deze Engelstalige versie wordt vertoond zonder ondertitels.

	NL/ EN   &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; Onze werkelijkheid stroomt en is voortdurend in beweging, we worden ermee geconfronteerd en veranderen mee. Panta rhei. πάντα ῥεῖ . ALLES STROOMT. In het afgelopen jaar werd het wandelen herontdekt. Met de sluiting van bars en restaurants, zagen we onze steden in een ander licht. Wandelen werd een doel op zich, een zintuiglijke ervaring. We namen de tijd om stil te staan en anders naar onze omgeving&#38;nbsp;te kijken. We&#38;nbsp;staan&#38;nbsp;op dit moment in vele opzichten&#38;nbsp;op een kantelpunt en&#38;nbsp;zijn onderhevig aan toevalligheden, maar kunnen kiezen hoe we ermee omgaan en of we de tijd zullen blijven nemen om te wandelen.


&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Met ALLES STROOMT wil ELDERS het momentum dat wandelen het afgelopen jaar heeft gekend vasthouden, maar dan in een stad die weer openbloeit en ademt. ALLES STROOMT is een stadswandeling en tentoonstelling geleid door de stroom van muziek die de bezoeker vraagt om als een 'flaneur' door de Kortrijkse straten te wandelen, met een open houding voor de schoonheid van het toeval. In zes lege winkeletalages verspreid over het centrum van Kortrijk tonen zes internationale kunstenaars: Martin Belou (Frankrijk, 1986), Paulien Föllings (Nederland, 1984), Philip Janssens (België, 1980), Camille Le Meur (Frankrijk, 1997), Sarah Margnetti (Zwitserland, 1983) en Marina Pinsky (Rusland, 1986), elk een installatie die ze specifiek voor ALLES STROOMT hebben gemaakt. 


 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; De lege winkeletalages worden door de kunstwerken geactiveerd als symbool voor de heropleving van de stad. De kunstwerken zullen in de loop van ALLES STROOMT evolueren en veranderen, deze transformatie zal ervoor zorgen dat de ervaring van de tentoonstelling in constante evolutie zal zijn, niet alleen door onze eigen gemoedstoestand, de weersomstandigheden of andere externe factoren, maar ook door de verandering die intrinsiek is aan de kunstwerken. Door hun plaatsing in verlichte etalages, worden ze zo mee onderdeel van het stadsgezicht, steeds in verandering, doorlopend toegankelijk. 


	&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; De bezoeker wordt begeleid door een podcast met fragmenten van gesprekken met de kunstenaars en een soundtrack die ter gelegenheid van ALLES STROOMT werd gecomponeerd door een trio muzikanten: Laura Huysmans, Mattias De Craene en Maya Dhondt. De podcast kan hier beluisterd worden, waarna de stroom van de muziek en de reflecties van de kunstenaars de bezoeker langs de verschillende locaties leidt. Door de isolatie van stadsgeluiden wordt de visuele ervaring versterkt en het ritme van de wandeling aangegeven.

 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 
Verder is het aan de bezoeker om zijn verbeelding te laten werken. Wandelen is een noodzakelijke handeling, die we zelf met betekenis laden en die ruimte geeft aan onze verbeelding en cultuur. De verschillende knooppunten, etalages, dienen als een Dérivé, door Debord beschreven als een interventie in de mentale ruimte van de stad. Een wandeling die niet logisch of doelgericht is maar die nieuwe plekken van de stad toont en op nieuwe ideeën brengt. We hopen dat de bezoeker met een verstrooide aandacht alles kan opnemen wat zijn pad kruist, omringd door de anonieme mensenmassa. Idealiter legt men de route meerdere keren af en zullen er telkens andere dingen opvallen in de Kortrijkse binnenstad maar ook in de kunstwerken die getoond worden.

NL/ EN &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; CORRIDOR is the second exhibition by ELDERS. By showing contemporary installations with an immersive character this project creates a parallel universe offering an escape from our daily reality, but at the same time opens up unexpected perspectives on it. With works by Darren Bader, Julie Béna, David Claerbout, Antoinette d’Ansembourg, Simon Lehner, Laure Prouvost, Janne Schimmel and Marianna Simnett

 
ELDERS invites the visitor to experience very different worlds, where perception is questioned, but also the way we deal with our daily existence that spans over widely diverse realities, media and platforms. A range of contemporary technological media including video, augmented reality and interactive installations is deployed to open the gates to different dimensions. Mesmerizing melodies, rhythmic whispers and otherworldly, almost magical characters lure the visitor into the multiverse of CORRIDOR. Through the corridor, symbolized by an architectural intervention by LEAGUE and 51N4E, the visitor enters the exhibition to discover a secluded garden at the heart of the city. Hidden away from the noise and distractions of the outside world, with a historical and decaying building overgrown by plants. At this unique location in the center of Kortrijk, the experience is augmented by an interdimensional winterbar that forms the gateway to the various portals of the exhibition.Arriving at the threshold, a synthetic siren appears at the entrance, conjuring us with flute sounds and calling us into the corridor. The constant and captivating&#38;nbsp;music and moving images are created by data sets of&#38;nbsp;Marianna Simnett in disguise that were fed in an Artificial Intelligence model. When we follow the lights into the corridor, we come across a scene by&#38;nbsp;Simon Lehner, who questions the contemporary constructs of identity, creating a synthesis between his own input and patterns generated by &#38;nbsp;algorithms and 3D printing. 
Through a door on the other side, we discover an arcade where the world of Janne Schimmel functions as an interface between this world and the virtual reality of computer games. The visitor is invited to participate in the game and walk&#38;nbsp;through this programmed world as the protagonist. Sneaking digitally&#38;nbsp;constructed creations through the screens of our smartphones by Augmented&#38;nbsp;Reality into what we perceive as our real world,&#38;nbsp;Darren Bader&#38;nbsp;adds an&#38;nbsp;intangible layer throughout the exhibition.We enter the hidden garden where looming lights are visible in an abandoned house. The skeleton of a caravan inhabits the first room, where&#38;nbsp;Julie Béna presents herself in an uncanny clownlike disguise. On the verge of horror and comedy her fictional characters grow towards catharsis, cleansing and&#38;nbsp;reinforcement. Through the hallway and the black curtains we enter the secret&#38;nbsp;flora of&#38;nbsp;Laure Prouvost, digging into the subconscious like hungry insects,&#38;nbsp;seduced&#38;nbsp;by the hypnotizing whispers. The warm glow stimulates the spectacle&#38;nbsp;into a burning climax.Climbing the staircase to the first floor, we find a strange set of mutated organisms growing in a dilapidated space. They react to our presence but initially it's unclear if they're hostile or friendly... This biotope evolved on&#38;nbsp;location through the investigations of&#38;nbsp;Antoinette d’Ansembourg, culminating in a miniature sculptural forest. Turning back into the unknown, the final black&#38;nbsp;veil confronts us. Stepping into this void we enter a world of comfort and bliss.&#38;nbsp;We travel through pristine landscapes of natural beauty.&#38;nbsp;David Claerbout&#38;nbsp;blurs&#38;nbsp;the boundaries of what we consider reality with high-definition animation&#38;nbsp;technique, he interrogates the very essence of existence. Seemingly specific&#38;nbsp;from a distance, but all-encompassing from within. &#38;nbsp;As a whole, CORRIDOR offers its visitors a phenomenological journey through physical appearances, the dream world of the subconscious and new facets of&#38;nbsp;social interaction where we encounter both ourselves and each other at the end&#38;nbsp;of the tunnel.Curated by ELDERS

NL&#38;nbsp;/ EN &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; ELDERS welcomes David Claerbout (b. 1969, Kortrijk) for a lecture on his artists' practice on 19 April. His work 'Travel' was part of our last exhibition CORRIDOR. David Claerbout lives and works in Antwerp and Berlin. He is known for his video installations, which he exhibits worldwide. We hope to see you at our very first Art Talk and convivial drink in the concert studio. The doors open at 19h and the lecture will start at 20h sharp. The language of this lecture is Dutch. The lecture is free with the possibility of a free contribution.

NL&#38;nbsp;/ EN &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; As an epilogue to CORRIDOR, Elders is organising a screening in collaboration with Arts Centre BUDA of the newly released 4K restoration of INLAND EMPIRE, David Lynch's alienating masterpiece. Reality and fiction, past and future become almost impossible to distinguish in this four-dimensional puzzle in which a Hollywood actress gets lost in her subconscious and the film sets via the script she is interpreting. The film was shot with a digital camera, completely independently produced and originally released in 2006 which makes the cinematic experience of this new restoration extra worthwhile. English version without subtitles.

In six empty store windows spread across the center of Kortrijk, six international artists (Martin Belou, Paulien Föllings, Philip Janssens, Camille Le Meur, Sarah Margnetti and Marina Pinsky) each show an installation they created especially for this exhibition, accompanied by a podcast with fragments of conversations with the artists and a soundtrack composed by Laura Huysmans, Mattias De Craene and Maya Dhondt.

Our reality flows and is in constant motion. We are confronted with it and changed by it. Panta rhei. πάντα ῥεῖ . ALLES STROOMT. In the past year, walking has been rediscovered. With the closing of the bars and restaurants, we saw our cities in a different light. Walking became a goal in itself, a sensorial experience. We took the time to look at our surroundings differently. We are currently in many ways at a tipping point and are subject to coincidences, but we can choose how to deal with it and whether we continue to take our time to walk.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; With ALLES STROOMT, ELDERS wants to hold on to this urge to walk and the momentum that walking has known over the past year, now in a city that is blossoming and breathing again. ALLES STROOMT is a city walk and exhibition guided by the flow of music that asks you to walk like a 'flaneur' through the streets of Kortrijk, with an open mind to the beauty of chance. In six empty shop windows spread over the center of Kortrijk, six international artists: Martin Belou (France, 1986), Paulien Föllings (Netherlands, 1984), Philip Janssens (Belgium, 1980), Camille Le Meur (France, 1997), Sarah Margnetti (Switzerland, 1983) and Marina Pinsky(Russia, 1986). Each artist shows an installation that will change and evolve during the two months of the exhibition ALLES STROOMT.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The empty shop windows are redefined by the installations as a symbol for the revival of the city. The works of art evolve in the course of ALLES STROOMT. This transformation ensures that the experience of the exhibition will be in constant evolution, not only due to our own state of mind, the weather conditions or other external factors, but also due to the intrinsical change of the artworks. By placing them in illuminated shop windows, they become part of the public space, constantly accessible and constantly changing.

 
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The visit is accompanied by a podcast with fragments of conversations with the artists and a soundtrack composed on the occasion of ALLES STROOMT by a trio of musicians: Laura Huysmans, Mattias De Craene and Maya Dhondt. Listen to the podcast here. The flow of music and conversations lead you through the different locations. The isolation from the city noises enhances the visual experience and sets the rhythm of the walk. Then it is up to you to let your imagination work. Walking is a necessary act; it frees your mind and gives space to your imagination. Just like the Dérivé, described by the Guy Debord, the various junctions, shop windows, serve as an intervention in the mental space of the city. It is a walk that is nor logical, nor purposeful, but shows new places in the city and brings new ideas.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; We hope that you take in everything that crosses your path with a distracted attention, surrounded by the anonymous crowd and in the best case, that you complete the route several times. Béna's nieuwe film stelt de stereotiepe positie van de kunstenaar ter discussie als iemand die zijn praktijk boven zijn gezin stelt, een situatie die des te gecompliceerder is als de persoon in de rol van kunstenaar een vrouw is. De film kan worden gezien als een complex en authentiek in het reine komen met maatschappelijke oordelen en zelfverwijten over het conflict tussen werk en gezin. Het weloverwogen gekozen genre van horror en nachtmerrie geeft de kunstenaar de ruimte om te spelen met de rollen van moeder, vrouw en dochter en deze symbolisch te overdrijven. Met hyperbool worden hun relaties omgekeerd wanneer zij haar familie gebruikt en misbruikt voor haar kunst.De hoofdrolspeler is een boosaardige, wispelturige nar en grappenmaker. Het personage is zowel verleidelijk als dictatoriaal en gebruikt en exploiteert de gedragsmechanismen en houdingen geassocieerd met donkere humor.
De film neigt naar een tragische clownshow en maakt gebruik van fysieke gebaren in plaats van woorden om de antithetische emoties van de kunstenaar bloot te leggen. De film is sterk overgeacteerd en schommelt tussen humor en tragedie. Ergens tussen mimespelers en clowns in dragen de figuren opvallende make-up op hun gezichten en de spanning in hun lichamen geeft de indruk van tragische pantomime. De hoofdrollen in de film worden gespeeld door de kunstenares en haar echte familie. Het betrekken van haar familie en hen misbruiken als performers in een film leidt de kunstenares naar catharsis, reiniging en versterking. De film speelt zich af in een sculpturaal object dat op een circuscaravan lijkt en herinneringen oproept aan de jeugd van de kunstenaar in een reizend theater.
Julie Béna is geboren in 1982 in Parijs, Frankrijk, en woont en werkt momenteel tussen Praag en Parijs. Ze is afgestudeerd aan de Villa Arson in Nice en volgde de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2012-13 maakte ze deel uit van le Pavillon, het onderzoekslaboratorium van het Palais de Tokyo, Parijs. In 2018 werd ze genomineerd voor de Prix AWARE vrouwen kunstprijs. Haar werk bestaat uit een eclectisch geheel van referenties, waarbij ze hedendaagse en oude literatuur, hoge en lage kunst, humor en ernst, parallelle tijden en ruimtes combineert. Haar werk, bestaande uit sculptuur, installatie, film en performance, lijkt vaak te zweven in een oneindig vacuüm, zich ontvouwend tegen een fictieve achtergrond waar alles mogelijk is. De afgelopen jaren heeft Béna een reeks persoonlijke kosmologieën ontwikkeld waarin zij schijnbaar banale personages en objecten opvoert die raadselachtige gesprekken en interacties met elkaar hebben. Van Pantopon Rose - een personage ontleend aan William S. Burroughs' 'Naked Lunch' - tot Miss None en Mister Peanut - een onstoffelijk zwevende pruik en de iconische antropomorfe pinda met één hoofd -, geeft Béna haar personages een unieke agency en stem, die hen definieert door wat ze niet zijn.

EN &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Béna’s new film casts doubt on the stereotypical position of the artist as someone who puts their practice before their family, a situation made all the more complicated if the person in the role of artist is a woman. The film may be viewed as a complex and authentic coming to terms with social judgement, as well as self-reproaches regarding the work-family conflict. Chosen with deliberation, the genre of horror and nightmare gives the artist room to play with, and symbolically exaggerate, the roles of mother, wife and daughter. Employing hyperbole, their relationships are inverted when she uses and abuses her family for her art. The main protagonist is a maliciously capricious jester come prankster. Both seductive and dictatorial, the character uses and exploits the behavioural mechanisms and attitudes associated with dark humour.
Verging towards a tragic clown show, the film employs physical gestures instead of words to lay bare the artist’s antithetic emotions. Emphatically overacted, it oscillates between laughter and tragedy. Somewhere between mimes and clowns, the figures wear striking make-up on their faces and the tension in their bodies gives the impression of tragic pantomime. The film’s main roles are played by the artist and her real family. Involving her family and abusing them as performers in a film leads the artist towards catharsis, cleansing and reinforcement. The film is set in a sculptural object resembling a circus caravan, evoking memories of the artist’s childhood in a travelling theatre.

NL &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Het idee voor dit werk gaat terug tot 1996, toen ik geïnteresseerd raakte in relaxatiemuziek, vooral muziek die voor medische doeleinden wordt gebruikt. De bron voor Travel was een werk getiteld "Relaxation profonde" gecomponeerd in het midden van de jaren tachtig door Eric Breton, wiens therapeutische muziek stress vermindert door het ritme geleidelijk te vertragen en uiteindelijk slaapmonofonie (dreunend geluid) opwekt, waaruit de patiënt wordt gewekt met een lichter geluid en de staat van ontspanning verlaat vergezeld van zoiets als een oplopende finale. Men zou kunnen verwachten dat de beelden die deze muziek voortbrengt zeer voorspelbaar zijn. Immers, als slaap het doel van de muziek is, zouden verrassingen contraproductief zijn. En toch, terwijl het visuele deel van de film als een dienaar het audiogedeelte volgt, is er iets aan het einde van de film dat discreet de oplopende finale in de muziek negeert. Het is alsof een verheffende en een deprimerende finale naast elkaar bestaan, zonder het minste conflict in zicht, en toch een afsluiting van de film verhinderen.

Het onpartijdige maar filmische karakter van de synthesizer, dat doet denken aan "generieke" beelden die iedereen zich kan voorstellen, aan plaatsen in een donker en rustig bos, heeft ertoe geleid dat er niet is gekozen voor film, maar voor geavanceerde computergegenereerde beelden. Deze keuze weerspiegelt de zoektocht naar een ruimte die het specifieke overstijgt, die net als de muziek generiek wil zijn: het zouden vele plaatsen kunnen zijn, maar geen enkele in het bijzonder. Na een productieperiode van drie jaar maakt een continue camerabeweging een reis die begint in een park, een donker Europees bos binnengaat, vervolgens een Amazonewoud binnengaat, en uiteindelijk het bos verlaat en een onopvallend boerenland onthult.
Travel is een poging om mezelf te bewijzen dat ik in staat ben te werken met iets dat tegelijkertijd intelligent en banaal is, en zonder ironie.
David Claerbout werd geboren in 1969 in Kortrijk, België. Hij studeerde aan de Nationale Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen en aan de Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Hij woont en werkt in Antwerpen en Berlijn. In 2007 ontving David Claerbout de Will-Grohmann-Preis van de Berlijnse Akademie der Künste en in 2010 de Peill-Preis van de Günther-Peill-Stiftung. Van 2002 tot 2003 nam hij deel aan het DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.Oorspronkelijk opgeleid in schilderen en tekenen, staat 

David Claerbout&#38;nbsp;bekend om zijn werken waarbij hij gebruik maakt van fotografie, video, digitale technologie en geluid. Zijn praktijk draait om de begrippen tijd en duur, beelden die hangen in een spanning tussen stilte en beweging, en de ervaring van tijddilatatie en herinnering. David Claerbout zegt dat hij "beeldhouwt in duur. De definitie van duur is anders dan die van tijd: duur is geen onafhankelijke toestand zoals tijd, maar een toestand tussenin." Met zijn grootschalige video-installaties maakt de kunstenaar de toeschouwer deel van het werk: hetzij door een verbinding tot stand te brengen tussen de geprojecteerde beelden op het scherm en het publiek, hetzij door een ruimtelijke relatie te creëren tussen het scherm zelf en de tentoonstellingsruimte, hetzij eenvoudigweg door een proces mogelijk te maken waarbij "een enkele scène zich kan ontwikkelen tot een andere door de aanwezigheid van de toeschouwer en een beetje tijd."

The idea for this work dates back to 1996, when I became interested in relaxation music, especially music used for medical purposes. The source for Travel was a work titled “Relaxation profonde” composed in the mid-1980s by Eric Breton, whose therapeutic music reduces stress by gradually slowing down the rhythm, ultimately inducing sleep monophony (droning sound), from which the patient is woken up with a lighter sound and exits the state of relaxation accompanied by something like an ascending finale. One might expect the images that this music produces to be hightly predictable. After all, if sleep is the purpose of the music, suprises would be counterproductive. And yet, while the visual part of the film follows the audio part like a servant, there is something about the end of the film that discretely disobeys the ascending finale in the music. It is as if an uplifting and a depressing finale co-exist, with not the slightest conflict in sight, nevertheless preventing a conclusion of the film.
The dispassionate yet cinematic character of the synthesizer, suggestive of “generic” images that anyone could imagine, of places in a dark and tranquil forest, prompted the decision not to film, but to use advanced computer-generated images. This choice reflects the search for a space that is beyond the specific, that wants to be generic like the music: it could be many places, but none in particular. After a three-year production period, a continuous camera movement makes a journey starting in a park, entering into a dark European forest, then into an Amazonian jungle, and finally exiting the forest, revealing a nondescript farmland.&#38;nbsp;Travel is an attempt to prove to myself that I am capable of working with something that is simultaneously intelligent and banal in equal measure, and with no irony.


David Claerbout was born in 1969 in Kortrijk, Belgium. He studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and at the Rijksakademie of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. He lives and works in Antwerp and Berlin. In 2007, David Claerbout was awarded the Will-Grohmann-Preis of the Berlin Akademie der Künste, and in 2010, he received the Peill-Preis of the Günther-Peill-Stiftung. He participated in the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program from 2002 to 2003. 

The artist has exhibited extensively.

Originally trained in painting and drawing, David Claerbout is known for his works using photography, video, digital technology and sound. His practice revolves around the concepts of temporality and duration, images suspended in a tension between stillness and movement, as well as the experience of dilated time and memory. David Claerbout says that he “sculpts in duration. The definition of duration is different from that of time: duration is not an independent state-like time, but an in-between state.” With his large-scale video-based installations, the artist makes the viewer a part of the work: whether by establishing a connection between the projected images on the screen and the audience, or by creating a spatial relationship between the screen itself and the exhibition space, or simply, by allowing a process by which “a single scene can develop into another by the presence of the spectator and a bit of time.”


 The artist has exhibited extensively. NL &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; De tijdelijke vreemdheid die uitgaat van de installaties van Antoinette d'Ansembourg vindt haar oorsprong in steden, waar bouwplaatsen die gebouwen slopen en straten uitgraven de netwerken van kabels en leidingen blootleggen die ze als levende organismen van vloeistoffen en stromen voorzien. Zij experimenteert met de kracht die inherent is aan deze locaties, waar je nooit weet of de hopen puin de schepping of de vernietiging aankondigen, en waar fantastische geboortes floreren verborgen voor de nieuwsgierigheid van de toeschouwers door dekzeilen en hekken. Het is binnen deze afgebakende, vaak voor het publiek verboden ruimtes dat zij nieuwe kennismakingen onderzoekt tussen beton, ondergrondse kabels en de planten die erin slagen te groeien in een vijandige omgeving; de vegetatie die verontreinigingen omzet in voeding krijgt nieuwe eigenschappen. Via haar installaties stelt de kunstenares deze confrontatie tussen menselijke constructie en natuurlijke ontwikkeling in vraag. 
Antoinette d'Ansembourg is gevoelig voor de transformatie van de natuur, van wezens en dingen - hun transgene kwaliteiten. In een verlaten huis in het centrum van Kortrijk, dat afgebroken zou worden, bloeide tijdens haar verblijf een intiem laboratorium op. Uit onwaarschijnlijke combinaties van levende wezens en afval ontstonden verontrustende mutaties. De organismen die de ruimte binnendringen werden geboren uit de speelse confrontatie tussen de verbeelding van d'Ansembourg en 1,5 ton ruwe klei, opgegraven uit de kleiput van Oostrozebeke nabij Kortrijk.


Antoinette d'Ansembourg (1994, België) woont en werkt in Brussel. Ze ontwikkelt haar visie op toekomstige vormen van vegetatie door middel van installaties, sculpturen, keramiek, tekeningen en, meer recent, olieverfschilderijen. Haar werk werd tentoongesteld in België en Frankrijk op locaties als Art Brussels (2019), Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles (Parijs, 2019), La Totale Collective (Parijs, 2020), Espace Triphasé (Brussel, 2021), Ulterieur (Kortrijk, 2021) en Cendar Brussels (2022). 
In 2020 was ze medeoprichtster van de artist-run space Espace Triphasé, een non-profit organisatie die het werk en onderzoek van opkomende kunstenaars wil ondersteunen door het aanbieden van ateliers en een tentoonstellingsruimte in het centrum van Brussel.

The temporal strangeness emanating from Antoinette d’Ansembourg’s installations is sourced in cities, where construction sites gutting buildings and excavating streets lay bare the networks of cables and pipes feeding them with fluids and currents like living organisms. She experiments with the power inherent in these sites, in which you never know whether mounds of rubble are announcing creation or destruction, and in which fantastical births flourish hidden from the curiosity of onlookers by tarps and barriers. It is within these circumscribed spaces, often forbidden to the public, that she examines new acquaintances between concrete, subterranean cables and the plants that manage to grow in hostile environments; the vegetation that converts contaminants into nourishment acquires new properties. Through her installations, the artist questions this confrontation between human construction and natural development. 

Antoinette d’Ansembourg is sensitive to the modification of nature, of beings and things – their transgenic qualities. In an abandoned house in the centre of Kortrijk, set to be demolished, an intimate laboratory blossomed during her stay. Unsettling mutations were forged, stemming from improbable combinations of living things and detritus. The organisms invading the space were born of the playful confrontation between d’Ansembourg’s imagination and 1.5 tonnes of raw clay, excavated from the Oostrozebeke clay pit near Kortrijk.

Antoinette d’Ansembourg (b. 1994, Belgium) lives and works in Brussels. She develops her vision of future forms of vegetation through installations, sculpture, ceramics, drawing and, more recently, oil painting. Her work has been exhibited in Belgium and France at venues including Art Brussels (2019), Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles (Paris, 2019), La Totale Collective (Paris, 2020), Espace Triphasé (Bruxelles, 2021), Ulterieur (Kortrijk, 2021) and Cendar Brussels (2022). Het nog jonge werk van Simon Lehner - de kunstenaar uit Wenen werd geboren in 1996 - wordt gekenmerkt door een terugkerende traumatische structuur. Een structuur waarin menselijke emoties en herinneringen samenkomen met processen van kunstmatige intelligentie die het verleden, het begraven of verdrongene reconstrueren, maar ook vervormen en aan de menselijke controle onttrekken. Zo ontstaan werken die putten uit particuliere en openbare beeldarchieven en werken aan een hedendaagse iconografie van de psychische noodtoestand. Een toestand die niet in de laatste plaats het mannelijke zelfbeeld, dat hoe dan ook en terecht in twijfel wordt getrokken, aan het wankelen brengt, maar die Lehner ook problematiseert als een zeer ambivalente kwestie van identiteit en toxische mannelijkheid. Lehner beweegt zich beeldend tussen klassieke fotografie, digitale productievormen en schilderkunst.


"Worldstarz". Vier mannen rond een tafel: Elvis Presley, Tom Hanks als Forrest Gump, en twee keer Michael Jackson. Andere mensen verschijnen aan de rand van het beeld. Twee identieke grijnzende monden met ontbrekende tanden. Een te grote, roodgeaderde testikel. Bloedrode vlakken aan de onderrand van de foto, daar links een datum: 20.7.2003. Het tafereel ziet eruit als een rozig, puttig interieur (verlicht als door een naar links gerichte, lage zon), waarin lichamen en vlakken, voor- en achtergrond, niet duidelijk van elkaar gescheiden zijn. Alle materie lijkt materieel, alsof ze gemaakt is van dunne, soms geperforeerde schelpen. De vier mannen aan tafel zien eruit als sjablonen in een laatmiddeleeuwse voorstelling van het avondmaal. Een opvallend detail: De twee Michael Jacksons spugen bloed of vleesachtige materie op de tafel - een handeling in het beeld die een gevoel van walging oproept. Het meubilair is even stereotiep als de figuren, want deze tafels en krukjes vind je net zo vaak in openbare parken als in gevangenissen in de VS. Er is nergens in dit beeld echt iets vast te houden - alles is in beweging. 

Geen wonder, want de foto van Simon Lehner gaat diep in op het onderwerp dat centraal staat in zijn jonge werk: de delicate, fragiele constructie van mannelijkheid in een giftige mannelijke omgeving. De datum in 2003 verwijst naar de tijd van zijn eigen adolescentie, waarin iconen als Michael Jackson alomtegenwoordig waren en nogal maffe idealen van mannelijkheid construeerden waarmee een hele generatie zich kon identificeren, zich zelfs vastklampte tot ze tot stof vergingen. Het geheel lijkt de incarnatie van het mannelijke uit de stereotypen van overgefokte beeldwerelden.


In zijn technische opbouw volgt Lehners beeld een mediaontwikkeling die

 momenteel

 het concept van representatie ingrijpend verandert. Uitgangspunt voor zijn composities zijn foto's, vaak uit zijn eigen biografie, maar ook uit de openbare ruimte, die door algoritmen worden omgezet in digitaal materiaal dat Lehner vervolgens moduleert. Algoritmes schrijven zich ook in het verdere artistieke proces in, vreten gaten, wissen, voegen willekeurig toe. Net zoals onze waarnemingen en herinneringen altijd slechts beschikbaar zijn als door ons brein gemodificeerde verschijningen, zonder betrouwbare substantie op de achtergrond, soms vol gaten, soms fictief poëtisch.

Simon Lehner's still young work - the Vienna-based artist was born in 1996 - is characterized by a recurring traumatic structure. A structure in which human emotions and memories converge with processes of artificial intelligence that reconstruct the past, the buried or the repressed, but also deform it and remove it from human control. In this way, works are created that draw on private and public image archives and work on a contemporary iconography of the psychic state of emergency. A state that not least shakes male self-images, which are in any case and rightly in question, but which Lehner also problematizes as a highly ambivalent question of identity and toxic masculinity. Lehner moves pictorially between classical photography, digital forms of production, and painting.

“Worldstarz”. Four men around a table: Elvis Presley, Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, and Michael Jackson twice. Other people are appearing at the edge of the picture. Two identical grinning mouths with missing teeth. An oversized, red-veined testicle. Blood-red areas at the bottom edge of the picture, there a date on the left: 20.7.2003. The scene looks like a rosy, pitted interior (lit as if by a left-leaning, low sun), in which bodies and planes, foreground and background, are not clearly separated. All matter appears to be material, as if made of thin, sometimes perforated shells. The four men at the table look like templates in a late medieval depiction of the evening meal. A striking detail: The two Michael Jacksons spit blood or fleshly matter onto the table - an action in the picture that evokes a feeling of disgust. The furniture is as stereotypical as the figures since these tables and stools can be found in public parks just as often as in prisons in the USA. There is nothing really solid to hold onto anywhere in this picture - all is in flux. 
No wonder, because Simon Lehner's picture goes deep into the subject matter that is central to his young work: the delicate, fragile construction of masculinity in a toxic masculine environment. The date in 2003 refers to the time of his own adolescence, during which poster icons like Michael Jackson were ubiquitous, constructing rather wacky ideals of masculinity that an entire generation could identify with, even clinging to until they crumbled to dust. The whole picture appears like the incarnation of the male from the stereotypes of overbred pictorial worlds.


In its technical construction, Lehner's image follows a media development that is currently significantly changing the concept of representation. The starting point for his compositions are photographs, often from his own biography, but also from public space, which algorithms transform into digital material that Lehner then modulates. Algorithms also inscribe themselves in the further artistic process, eating holes, erasing, adding arbitrarily. Just as our perceptions and memories are always only available as appearances modified by our brain, without any reliable substance in the background, sometimes full of holes, sometimes fictionally poetic.

Into All That Is Here verkent de notie van lust na tijden van duisternis. Binnen haar film zet de kunstenares de verkenning voort van thema's die aan bod kwamen in Wantee (2013), een verhaal dat gekoppeld is aan haar grootvader. Deze keer richt ze zich op het graven in het onderbewustzijn van dit personage, diep in zijn fantasieën, zoals een insect of vogel wordt aangetrokken door het stuifmeel van een bloem en zich daar door de bloem laat verwennen met genot. De video toont een warme en slijmerige sfeer en een gevoel van opluchting na een lange zoektocht van duisternis, waardoor de bezoeker de indruk krijgt dat hij zojuist een slijmerige, zweterige bloem is binnengedrongen, totdat de beelden verbranden en verdwijnen...

Laure Prouvost (geb. 1867, Lieumeconu, Frankrijk) Leeft en werkt.

Into All That Is Here explores the notion of lust after times of darkness. Within her film, the artist will continue the exploration of themes addressed in Wantee (2013), a story linked to her grandfather. This time, she focuses on digging into the subconscious of this character, deep into his fantasies, as an insect or bird is attracted to the pollen of a flower and when there by the flower indulge its with pleasure. The video depicts a warm and slimy atmosphere and a sensation of relief after a long search of darkness, giving the impression to the visitor that they have just penetrated a slimy, sweaty flower, till the images burn and disappear…
