Op zaterdag 13 september opent de zevende tentoonstelling gecureerd door ELDERS Collectief, in een historische industriële omgeving die een fundamentele rol heeft gespeeld in de economische en creatieve geschiedenis van Kortrijk. Voor Hippocampus selecteerde ELDERS zowel opkomend talent als gevestigde kunstenaars uit binnen- en buitenland.
De tentoonstelling brengt werk samen van Elsemarijn Bruys, Arnaud Eubelen, Geert Goiris, Aglaia Konrad, Lennart Lahuis, Lawrence Lek, Brigitte Louter, Gordon Matta-Clark, Charlotte Posenenske en Shervin/e Sheikh Rezaei.
Op de Pottelberg ontvouwt zich een uitgestrekt
gebied met fabrieks- en kantoorgebouwen, opgetrokken in verschillende decennia en stijlen.
Op enkele gevels prijkt nog steeds het blauw
zeepaardje dat de Vlaamse kunstenaar Octave
Landuyt in 1950 ontwierp als embleem voor
Van Marcke, Belgisch marktleider in sanitair
en verwarming. Tot voor kort was dit bedrijf hier gevestigd, voor het zijn activiteiten
verplaatste naar een nieuwe, hypermoderne site
buiten de stad. Dit hoofdstuk werd voorafgegaan door vele andere: archeologische sporen wijzen al op bewoning sinds het Mesolithicum.
De naam “Pottelberg” verwijst vermoedelijk naar kleiafzettingen in de bodem, gezien
niet ver hiervandaan ook de bekende Pottelberg-dakpannen werden geproduceerd.
Vanaf
het begin van de 20e eeuw vestigde Kunstwerkstede De Coene hier hun hoofdkwartier.
Aanvankelijk geïnspireerd door de Arts and
Crafts-beweging, groeide het bedrijf uit tot
een internationaal toonaangevende speler. De
Coene werkte samen met figuren als Henry Van
de Velde, Marcel Breuer, Charlotte Perriand,
Jean Prouvé, Renaat Braem, Léon Stynen, Eero Saarinen en Harry Bertoia. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog breidde het bedrijf uit naar
geprefabriceerde gelamineerde spanten voor
de bouwsector. Het werd een wereldwijd opererend bedrijf dat veel van de paviljoenen voor
de Wereldtentoonstelling Expo ‘58 in Brussel
bouwde. Een daarvan is nog steeds te vinden
op het terrein. De opkomst van de Biënnale Interieur in 1968 zou moeilijk voorstelbaar
zijn zonder de dynamische aanwezigheid van De Coene in Kortrijk. Vandaag wordt het gebied
via Landmarck herontwikkeld tot een broedplaats voor innovatieve projecten.
Terwijl we ons een weg banen langs de
verschillende bouwlagen van de verlaten site, wordt het verstrijken van de tijd tastbaar en lijken herinneringen aan een nabij en
ver verleden in de lucht te hangen. Steeds
opnieuw, als een déjà vu, verschijnt de golvende vorm van het zeepaardje als een
geestelijke gids door de verlaten steegjes en gangen, en onthult verborgen hoeken en vergeten sporen van vroegere levens. De
Latijnse naam voor het zeepaardje is Hippocampus, wat ook de naam is van een
mysterieus deel van de menselijke hersenen.
Het kreeg die naam vanwege de fysieke gelijkenis met het zeewezen. Net zoals de aarde
in de cartografie in twee hemisferen wordt
verdeeld om ruimtelijke informatie voor navigatie weer te geven, zo is ook het brein
verdeeld in twee hersenhelften, elk met een
eigen hippocampus. Hoewel de exacte
werking van het menselijk brein voor de neurowetenschap grotendeels een raadsel blijft, lijken
deze hippocampi een sleutelrol te spelen in
het vormen en ophalen van herinneringen en
daarmee ook in ruimtelijke oriëntatie, die ons
in staat stelt te navigeren. Voor deze gelegenheid nodigen we je uit om het zeepaardje in
onze geest de gids te laten zijn, die ons begeleidt op deze labyrintische reis door de stromingen van ruimte en tijd.
Hippocampus valt samen met de derde editie van Kortrijk Art Weekend en

The seventh exhibition curated by ELDERS Collectief opens on Saturday, September 13, in a historic industrial setting that has played a fundamental role in Kortrijk's economic and creative history. For Hippocampus, ELDERS selected both emerging talent and established artists from Belgium and abroad.
The exhibition brings together work by Elsemarijn Bruys, Arnaud Eubelen, Geert Goiris, Aglaia Konrad, Lennart Lahuis, Lawrence Lek, Brigitte Louter, Gordon Matta-Clark, Charlotte Posenenske and Shervin/e Sheikh Rezaei.
A vast area unfolds on Pottelberg, containing a multitude of former factory and office
buildings, built through the course of many
decades in different building styles. Several of these structures are adorned with the
stylized image of a seahorse. This blue and
white logo was designed in 1950 by Flemish
artist Octave Landuyt for Van Marcke, Belgium’s leading sanitary and heating distributor
that recently moved their activities from this terrain to their current state of the art facilities outside the city. This chapter
of the site proves to have been preceded by a long history of consecutive activities, as
archeological finds have documented occupation since the Mesolithic period. The name, meaning pot’s hill, must refer to the clay deposits in the soil, as the famous Pottelberg roofing tiles were produced on a massive
factory site further down the road.
Starting
in the early 20th century, Kunstwerkstede
De Coene had their headquarters at this ver location. Initially a furniture and interior
workshop inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, the company later introduced laminated wood and produced for the likes of Henry Van
De Velde, Marcel Breuer, Charlotte Perriand,
Jean Prouvé, Renaat Braem, Léon Stynen, Eero
Saarinen and Harry Bertoia. After the Second
World War, the company expanded into prefabricated laminated trusses for the construction industry, becoming a company operating worldwide and building many of the pavilions for the
Expo ’58 World Exhibition in Brussels. One of
these can still be found on the premises. The emergence of the Biënnale Interieur in 1968
would be hard to imagine without the dynamic
presence of De Coene in Kortrijk. When De
Coene was dissolved in the 1970s, the company
Van Marcke took over the terrain and the existing buildings, from where they kept expanding
until their recent relocation. Today the area
is being redeveloped into a hotbed for innovative projects through LandMarck.
Whilst we navigate past different building
layers of the abandoned site, the passage
of time becomes tangible and memories of recent and distant pasts seem to float in
the air. Recurringly appearing as a déjà vu,
the swirling shape of the seahorse becomes a spirit guide through the desolate alleys
and corridors, revealing hidden corners and
forgotten traces of previous lives. The Latin
name for the seahorse is Hippocampus, which happens to be the same name given to a mysterious part of the human brain that is called
after the marine creature because of their
physical resemblance. Similar to the earth
that is divided into two hemispheres in cartography to communicate spatial information
for navigation, the brain is divided into two cerebral hemispheres, each of these containing their own hippocampus. Though the exact
workings of the human cerebrum remain elusive
to neuroscience, these hippocampi seem to be instrumental in the creation and retrieval of
memories, and subsequently in spatial orientation which enables navigation. For the
occasion we invite you to allow the seahorse
in our minds to draw the chariot, escorting us on this labyrinthine journey through
the currents of space and time.
Hippocampus coincides with the third edition of Kortrijk Art Weekend and ends during the closing weekend of WONDER Creativity Festival on Sunday, November 2. More information at:

Gordon Matta-Clark's work in the entrance area can be visited free of charge. An admission ticket is required to visit the rest of the exhibition.
