Op zaterdag 13 september opent de zevende tentoonstelling gecureerd door ELDERS Collectief, in een historische industriële omgeving die een fundamentele rol heeft gespeeld in de economische en creatieve geschiedenis van Kortrijk. Voor Hippocampus selecteerde ELDERS zowel opkomend talent als gevestigde kunstenaars uit binnen- en buitenland.

De tentoonstelling brengt werk samen van Elsemarijn Bruys, Arnaud Eubelen, Geert Goiris, Aglaia Konrad, Lennart Lahuis, Lawrence Lek, Brigitte Louter, Gordon Matta-Clark, Charlotte Posenenske en Shervin/e Sheikh Rezaei.


De tien kunstenaars onderzoeken in hun werk hoe verschillende omgevingen – van natuurlijke landschappen tot stedelijke en imaginaire ruimtes – resoneren met herinnering, temporaliteit en betekenis. Net zoals de hippocampus in het menselijk brein essentieel is voor geheugen en ruimtelijke oriëntatie, confronteert deze tentoonstelling de bezoeker met de impact van ruimte en tijd op onze gemoedstoestand.

De incheckbalie van Hippocampus bevindt zich in Hal D op LandMarck: een indrukwekkende industriële site van 4.000 vierkante meter, die zelden eerder toegankelijk was voor het brede publiek. Het gebouw ademt geschiedenis: van de constructie door de beroemde kunstwerkstede De Coene, die hier vanaf het begin van de twintigste eeuw baanbrekend ontwerpen produceerde voor onder meer Henry Van de Velde en Marcel Breuer, langs sporen van de bombardementen tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog die de site in een maanlandschap veranderden, en overbluifselen uit de periode onder Van Marcke, die hier uitgroeide tot Belgisch marktleider in sanitair en verwarming.

Met Artificial Landscape 2.0 van Elsemarijn Bruys presenteert ELDERS collectief een gigantisch opblaasbaar kunstwerk dat de ruimte volledig transformeert. Dit monumentale werk, met een lengte van 60 meter, bestaat uit twee neon-groene organische muren die het gevoel van oriëntatie bij de bezoekers doen verliezen.

Daarnaast introduceren we een primeur voor het Belgische kunstveld met het werk van Lawrence Lek, winnaar van de Frieze Artist Award 2024. Zijn CGI-musical AIDOL vertelt het verhaal van een superster op de rand van de ondergang, die de hulp van AI inroept om haar comebackalbum te schrijven.

Ook is het werk te zien van de gerenommeerde kunstenaar Aglaia Konrad, die in 2023 de prestigieuze Österreichischen Staatspreis für Fotografie won. Deze erkenning benadrukt haar invloedrijk bijdrage aan de hedendaagse fotografie. Daarnaast produceren Lennart Lahuis en Shervin/e Sheikh Rezaei nieuw werk voor deze tentoonstelling en versmelten de werken door de scenografie van Arnaud Eubelen in de industriële omgeving.

Hippocampus valt samen met de derde editie van Kortrijk Art Weekend en eindigt ook tijdens het slotweekend van WONDER Creativity Festival op zondag 2 november. Meer info via: www.kortrijkart.be en

The seventh exhibition curated by ELDERS Collectief opens on Saturday, September 13, in a historic industrial setting that has played a fundamental role in Kortrijk's economic and creative history. For Hippocampus, ELDERS selected both emerging talent and established artists from Belgium and abroad.

The exhibition brings together work by Elsemarijn Bruys, Arnaud Eubelen, Geert Goiris, Aglaia Konrad, Lennart Lahuis, Lawrence Lek, Brigitte Louter, Gordon Matta-Clark, Charlotte Posenenske and Shervin/e Sheikh Rezaei.

In their work, the ten artists explore how different environments – from natural landscapes to urban and imaginary spaces – resonate with memory, temporality and meaning. As the hippocampus in the human brain is essential for memory and spatial orientation, this exhibition confronts visitors with the impact of space and time on our state of mind.

The Hippocampus check-in desk is located in Hall D at LandMarck: an impressive 4,000-square-meter industrial site, rarely previously accessible to the general public. The building breathes history: from its construction by the famous art work stede De Coene, who produced pioneering designs here from the early twentieth century for the likes of Henry Van de Velde and Marcel Breuer, past traces of the bombings during World War II that turned the site into a moonscape and remnants of the period under Van Marcke, who expanded to become Belgium's market leader in sanitairy and heating here.

With Artificial Landscape 2.0 by Elsemarijn Bruys, ELDERS collective presents a gigantic inflatable artwork that completely transforms the space. This monumental work, with a length of 60 meters, consists of two neon-green organic walls that make visitors lose their sense of orientation.

We are introducing a premiere for the Belgian art field with the work of Lawrence Lek, winner of the Frieze Artist Award 2024. His CGI musical AIDOL tells the story of a superstar on the brink of collapse, who enlists the help of AI to write her comeback album.

Also on display is the work of renowned artist Aglaia Konrad, who won the prestigious Österreichischen Staatspreis für Fotografie in 2023. This recognition highlights her influential contribution to contemporary photography. In addition, Lennart Lahuis and Shervin/e Sheikh Rezaei are producing new work for this exhibition and, through Arnaud Eubelen's scenography, the works blend into the industrial environment.

Hippocampus coincides with the third edition of Kortrijk Art Weekend and ends during the closing weekend of WONDER Creativity Festival on Sunday, November 2. More info at: www.kortrijkart.be and
